This presentation outlines the regulatory process for the management and protection of historic resources under the Alberta Historical Resources Act. It includes definitions of historic resource terms and discussions of projects that trigger the need for Historical Resources Act approval, and what types of investigations may be required before approval is granted. Deciphering some of the typical language used by the Alberta regulator in their correspondence is also discussed. The regulatory processes are presented with examples of interesting archaeological discoveries made during studies completed in advance of development projects.
