The Consulting Engineers of Alberta (CEA) Young Professionals (YP) Group is excited to host a technical tour about the design and construction of the Harvie Passage.

Prior to the Harvie Passage Project, the Calgary Weir (part of the Western Headworks) was the only man-made barrier to boaters and fish passage in the 100 km reach of the Bow River between the Bearspaw Dam, located in the western limits of Calgary, and the Carseland-Bow River Headworks weir, located near the village of Carseland, east of Calgary.

The goal of the Harvie Passage Project was to redevelop the Calgary Weir to eliminate the extreme drowning hazard it created and to enable river passage for non-motorized boats and fish while maintaining the Western Headworks’ primary function of facilitating diversion from the Bow River to the Western Irrigation District. Further to this it has provided a well-used recreational facility for kayaking, rafting and even surfing on the south side of the river.

The unprecedented flood of June 2013 within the Bow and Elbow Rivers resulted in the flood discharge being conveyed through the Harvie Passage causing damage. Since then, the Harvie Passage has been rehabilitated, thanks in part to the presenters for this technical tour Chuck Slack, Senior Civil Engineer and Principal and Kurt Tomblin, Civil Engineer both of Klohn Crippen Berger.

Please join us on this dryland technical tour of the Harvie Passage, a modern feat of in-river engineering!
