CEA YP group will be hosting a tour of the Sunnyside Flood Barrier works, accompanied by representatives from PCL Construction and the City of Calgary. The team will be touring the YP group through the ongoing construction of the flood control barrier along Memorial Drive.
Heavy rainfall and a melting snowpack in the spring of 2013 resulted in significant and widespread flooding throughout Southern Alberta. Within Calgary, flood waters overtopped the riverbanks throughout the core of the city, most of which is located within the floodplain, both north and south of the river. Of these areas, Sunnyside and Hillhurst communities were notably impacted with water levels flooding the streets, homes, and businesses. Ultimately, the floods caused more than $6 billion in damages and extensive evacuations in addition to the devastation caused throughout the remainder of the City.
As a result, the City has committed to providing flood mitigations for the 1:100 year event from 14th Street NW to Centre Street along the river. Construction of the 2.6 km long barrier began in 2024 and has been estimated to cost roughly $50 million, including upgrades and functional enhancements to the existing, busy Bow River pathway.
Providing this project has required extensive planning, risk management, and coordination to ensure that the wall serves to protect the surrounding communities from future flooding events while balancing costs and minimizing disruptions to Memorial Drive and the Bow River pathway, both which see consistent traffic.
